Jungle Survival 101

While in the Philippines we spent time at the Jungle Environment Survival Training camp (JEST), where we learning some basics on survival from local natives which should help us during our 4 months in the largely undeveloped wilderness of a small island in Fiji.

We learned a lot of things such as:

  • Proper machete handling (this one we had some experience with from Costa Rica)

  • How to get water from jungle vines

  • How to carve bamboo utensils, and cook with them

  • How to find emergency food by finding and cooking small bats that make their homes inside bamboo

  • Fire-making with only bamboo

Here's a video of the instructor demonstrating the fire-making technique.
